“The Dude” auction joins Julien’s and TCM’s previously announced lineup of over 1,000 of the most famous and instantly recognizable pop culture artifacts ever to come to auction.
Since its world premiere at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival twenty-five years ago, the Coen Brothers’ independent film The Big Lebowski went on to become one of the world’s greatest and most enduring cult classics of all time. It is one of the most quotable and pop culture defining films from the 90s that spawned legions of pseudo religious followers of Dudeism who practice the laidback lifestyle and philosophy of the film’s hero “The Dude” played by Jeff Bridges.
In an exclusive video filmed for TCM and Julien’s https://youtu.be/Zmfk8j9nD3I Jeff Bridges talks about the iconic film and shows some of the iconic items on offer at the auction including:
Jeff Bridges “Jeffrey” The Dude ensemble (estimate: $30,000 - $50,000)
A light brown knitted fleece bathrobe and an off-white cotton Jockey T-shirt worn by Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. This ensemble appears in the opening scene of the film, when The Dude walks through a Ralph’s grocery store and drinks from a carton of milk when the Stranger (Sam Elliott) introduces the now iconic character to the audience. In the following scene, when the Dude approaches and enters his home, he is wearing this ensemble when he’s attacked by Jackie Treehorn’s (Ben Gazzara) enforcers as well as other scenes when the Dude pours himself a Caucasian. The Dude also wears this type of T-shirt at various points throughout the film, including at Hollywood Star Lanes bowling alley. Includes a DVD of the film.
Jeff Bridges “Jeffrey” The Dude sunglasses (estimate: $20,000 - $30,000). An original pair of sunglasses as seen worn by Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. This pair of sunglasses features nylon frames with material flaking present throughout, as well as amber-colored polycarbonate lenses and appears throughout the film, and is notably in the opening scene of the film, when The Dude walks through a Ralph’s grocery store and drinks from a carton of milk and the diner scene with Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) discussing the toe with green nail polish that was believed to belong to Bunny Lebowski (Tara Reid).
“The Big Lebowski: "The Official Storyboards" (estimate: $500 - 700 each).
The entire film’s storyboards all created by J. Todd Anderson, famous for laying out the storyboards, scene by scene, for all of the Coen Brothers’ cinematic masterpieces going back to Raising Arizona. It is rare for any directors to do storyboards for every scene in the film, but that is the method created with the Coen Brothers and J. Todd Anderson. Created with brush, pencil, pen, and ink on standard bond paper they include handwritten text stating scenes such as: "Tumbleweed Scene," "Grocery Store Scene," "Bungalow Scene," "Home Invasion Scene," "Bowling Scene" (photo right) "Big Lebowski Mansion Scene" and more.
This “end-to-end” storyboard collection auction is a first for the industry and is expected to garner significant excitement among movie fans around the world.
Jeff Bridges also signed memorabilia such as donated film replica bowling pins that he made unique doodles on, a bowling ball return from the set of the production (photo left) and other memorabilia as part of this special auction.
